ALVEOLE 14 – Transformation of a Submarine Base
LIN Integrative labor Finn GEIPEL + Giulia ANDI
The exhibition “The Bunker” running at the MAXXI, in Rome, has been the opportunity for LIN to showcase the archives of ALVEOLE 14. The project is explained through a timeline, condensed on a 6x1m table, which enables an overall view on the complex research process. The content of this research includes the text written for the conference “Atlantic Wall” held in Milano in 2007, 300 pages of scientific documentation (competition folder, climatic study, press, research), a Video, an iron model and images of the project. This research material has been resized to a very small scale, only readable and understandable using a magnifying glass.
The submarine base, constructed by the German navy during World War II, is located in the harbor of Saint-Nazaire. The bunker´s monumental scale, 295 x 130 x 18m, covers a 3,7 hectares area, and the roof, made of reinforced concrete, is 4 to 9 metres thick. The base is split into 14 submarine cells (called alvéoles), of which eight were designed as dry docks and six as water basins. The cells are connected inside through an intersecting “street”. The transformation of the bunker into a contemporary cultural center, takes place in a broader plan to regenerate the waterfront.
The rehabilitation process involves minimal interventions, intending to preserve the enigmatic atmosphere of the original structure. The project consists of two cultural elements, LIFE, Lieu International des forms emergentes, a “mono-space” which can open towards the harbor, and VIP, Scene de Musiques Actuelles, a simple dense cube enclosed by a steel frame, which can accommodate 600 people, a bar, a balcony archive and recording studios.
These distinct elements are connected by the interior street, which also leads, through staircases, to a roof platform where a geodesic dome from the Berlin Tempelhof Airport serves as a think tank for art and music projects.
The bunker is determinant for the city´s morphology and carries a strong emotional impact, it acts as a monumental trace which evokes past violence, and has to connect with the urban surrounding, becoming suitable for new uses.

ETEROGENEO ELEMENTAIRE
The project consists of 4 elements – The LIFE, space for emerging art forms – The VIP ROOM contemporary music events, with a bar, an are- chive – An internal street that crosses the entire base, connecting the various programs and creating interaction between each of the cells (it is the main access) – The hemispherical geodesic dome on the roof, experimental space, a “think tank” in lightweight con- traction — It is defined by a carpet of light hanging from the ceiling made of metal rods and LEDs and, a coating to the ground Right on the technical areas, luminous sources shaped in dark volumes A vertical Piranesi’s connection was created to bring natural light into the tunnel and to connect spaces such as the access to upper floors and roof –
This coexistence is precisely the challenge. The VIP is an existing local institution, active all the year The LIFE is a new institution; international, even spatially are designed differently
